Rescuers Remove Deer From Ice In Waltham
WALTHAM (CBS) - Rescue teams were called in to save a deer Friday morning that had gotten stuck on ice.
Crews showed up at the Cambridge Reservoir around 11 a.m. after getting a report that the deer was stranded out on the ice.

Rescuers in survival suits made their way out onto the icy reservoir and managed to reach the deer.
The deer, which was exhausted and weak from struggling on the ice for so long, was taken to Tufts Wildlife Clinic. Because of its poor condition, officials said it would not have survived, and had to be euthanized.
The entire rescue effort lasted around two hours.
Waltham's Dept. Fire Chief Roger Hebert acknowledged the dangers to rescuers. He said while the rescue may seem like a waste of resources, it is necessary.

"We do have to perform the rescue because unfortunately you may have some person with good intentions that may try to attempt the rescue on their own without all this equipment – especially the cold weather suits," Dept. Chief Hebert said.
The cost of the operation was not immediately known. In the past, officials have said these types of incidents also serve as good training exercises for ice rescue crews.
