Dead Finback Whale Will Be Buried On Rockport Beach Thursday
ROCKPORT (CBS) - The dead Finback whale that washed up on the Boston Harbor Islands before making its way to Rockport will be buried Thursday.
Hurricane Sandy moved the whale about a mile from where it originally washed up in Rockport a few weeks ago.
Officials say the new spot is near a parking lot and makes burying the whale a lot easier since heavy equipment can be brought in.
A scientist and volunteers from Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries have offered to cut up the remains and remove the bones.
The bones will be given to the Seacoast Science Center in Rye, N.H. to put on display.
The town will bury what's left - blubber and skin - on Cape Hedge Beach, a place they have buried things that have washed up in the past, Rockport's Public Works Director Joe Parisi told WBZ NewsRadio 1030.
When the whale first washed up in Rockport, the town said they would leave it to decompose on its own.
