David Ortiz's Career In All-Star Games
BOSTON (CBS) -- David Ortiz played in his 10th and final All-Star Game Tuesday night as the American League beat the National League 4-2.
Ortiz went 0-for-1 at the plate with a walk before being lifted for a pinch runner in the third inning Tuesday night, but was honored throughout the evening and received a rousing ovation as he walked off the field. The entire American League roster greeted him outside of the dugout, and Ortiz tipped his cap to the fans in San Diego to end his All-Star career. Prior to the game, he also gave the AL team a passionate speech in the clubhouse to get them ready for the exhibition.
Ortiz finishes his All-Star career 5-for-17 at the plate. Here's a look back on how Big Papi fared in his nine other All-Star Game appearances over his 20-year career.
2004
Ortiz only got one at-bat in his first All-Star Game, held at Minute Maid Park in Houston, but he made the most of it. Pinch hitting for teammate Manny Ramirez in the sixth inning, Ortiz took the first pitch he saw and clubbed a two-run homer off Carl Pavano to help the American League to a 9-4 victory -- the AL's eighth straight All-Star win.
Ortiz also participated in the Home Run Derby, but only hit three dingers and was out after the first round.
2005
Ortiz made his second straight mid-summer classic in 2005 in Detroit, this time getting the start and batting third for the AL. He recorded a pair of hits in his two at-bats, including an RBI single in the bottom of the third to give the AL a 1-0 lead at the time, en route to a 7-5 win.
Big Papi was in the Home Run Derby again as well, blasting 17 homers in the first round to advance to the semis, but was knocked out with just three second round blasts.
2006
Ortiz once again got the start, this time at first base with the game in an NL park. He hit third and went 0-for-2 at the plate with a strikeout at PNC Park in Pittsburgh, as the AL won 3-2.
Ortiz also made his third straight appearance in the Home Run Derby, clubbing 13 dingers, but once again fell in the semis.
2007
Ortiz made it four straight seasons with an All-Star nod in 2007, once again starting at first and hitting third for the AL at AT&T Park in San Francisco. He went 0-for-2 at the dish in the American League's 5-4 victory.
2008
Ortiz was voted as a starter, but a wrist injury kept him from participating. He still attended the festivities at Yankee Stadium, watching teammate J.D. Drew earn MVP honors in the AL's 3-1, 15-inning win.
2010
After a two-year absence from participating in baseball's mid-summer fun, Ortiz was back (and back big) in 2010 at Angels Stadium in Anaheim. He won the Home Run Derby with a total of 32 blasts, beating Hanley Ramirez 11-5 in the finals.
As for the game itself, Ortiz went 1-for-2 with a strikeout and a single, entering as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the sixth. Ortiz led off the bottom of the ninth with a single off Dodgers closer Jonathan Broxton, but was stranded as the next three batters were retired in order and the NL won 3-1 for their first All-Star Game victory since 1996.
2011
Ortiz was the American League's starting DH, batting seventh, at Chase Field in Phoenix in 2011, one of six Red Sox to make the All-Star roster. He went 0-for-2 at the plate, striking out against Clayton Kershaw in the fifth inning before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the seventh.
He hit nine homers in his final Home Run Derby the night before, falling in the second round.
2012
Ortiz started again, DHing and batting seventh, going 1-for-2 with a single in an 8-0 loss for the American League at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.
2013
Ortiz went 0-for-2, flying out and grounding into a double play in his two plate appearances, as the AL won 3-0 at Citi Field in New York.
2016
In his final All-Star Game appearance, Ortiz started at DH and hit fourth for the American League. He grounded out to first to end the first inning, and then walked in the bottom of the third inning against Jose Fernandez, who said prior to the game he was going to groove three fastballs to Ortiz. But groove he did not, and after getting his free pass Ortiz was lifted for a pinch runner, who later scored.
With that, he walked off the field, saluting the crowd and hugging all of his AL teammates.
