David Ortiz Day-To-Day After Fouling Ball Off Shin
BOSTON (CBS) -- David Ortiz is considered day-to-day after exiting Wednesday night's 9-4 loss to the Yankees in the ninth inning. The Red Sox slugger fouled a 99-mph fastball from New York's Dellin Betances off his right shin and left the game wincing in obvious pain.
Bryce Brentz came in and finished the at-bat for Ortiz, who had to be helped off the field by a trainer and manager John Farrell. Ortiz underwent X-rays and a fluoroscan after the game but the results came back negative, so it appears Ortiz avoided a serious injury.
Red Sox president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski said after the game that Ortiz was "doing much better" after the initial injury looked bad.
Also among the walking wounded on the Red Sox are right fielder Mookie Betts, who exited Wednesday night's game with tightness in his right calf, and starter Steven Wright, who will skip his next start with inflammation in his right shoulder. The knuckleballer suffered the shoulder injury when he dove back to second base on a pickoff attempt while pinch-running in Los Angeles.
The 40-year-old Ortiz is batting .307 with 25 home runs and 88 RBI in his final major league season.
