David Ortiz Feeling Great, Excited For 'Tres Amigos'
BOSTON (CBS) -- A slimmer looking David Ortiz arrived in Fort Myers, Florida on Tuesday, the final member of the Boston Red Sox to report to spring training.
The Red Sox DH received numerous hugs from his teammates as he made his way to the team's complex. He underwent his physical and met with manager John Farrell, as all position players did on Tuesday.
When that was over, Ortiz hit the cages with new teammates Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez, along with outfielder Rusney Castillo.
Big Papi wasn't scheduled to talk to the media until Wednesday, the first day of full squad workouts for Boston, but took a few questions after batting practice on Tuesday.
"I feel good. A little older than last year," he said with a chuckle.
Ortiz called Sandoval and Ramirez "special," referring to the new heart of the Boston lineup as the "tres amigos."
The 39-year-old Ortiz is signed through this season with a club or vesting option for next season and a club option for 2017. Earlier Tuesday, general manager Ben Cherington said Ortiz is going to be in Boston for as long as he wants.
"I think David knows he's going to be a Red Sox for as long as he wants to be a Red Sox," said Cherington. "We're glad he is still here and still a huge part of what we're doing on the field."
Ortiz was still a force last season for Boston, clubbing 35 homers and driving in 104 runs in 142 games played.
