Darnell McDonald Announces He's Joining Yankees
BOSTON (CBS) -- Over the weekend, the Red Sox needed to make room on the roster for Josh Beckett, so they designated Darnell McDonald for assignment.
While McDonald's future remained up in the air for a few days, it seemed unlikely that a team would go out of its way to sign him. After all, the 33-year-old was hitting just .214 this season.
Then came this rather shocking announcement from McDonald, via his Twitter page: "Just got off the phone w/ Mr. [Brian] Cashman. Happy to announce I'm a new member of the N.Y.Y. #Happy4th #blessed"
The Yankees claimed McDonald off waivers, and he's expected to join his new Yankee teammates Friday, when the team visits Fenway Park.
McDonald will be joining a first-place Yankees team, though it's not yet known whose spot on the roster he will take.
After he was designated for assignment last week, McDonald tweeted, "Dream come true to play in Boston want to wish my boys good luck the rest of the year! Much love to [Red Sox Nation]!"
