Danvers Family On Drunk Driver In Fatal Crash: 'We Just Want Her To Pay'
BOSTON (CBS) - Wearing red ribbons and memorial T-shirts, loved ones of Dillon Renard showed up in force Thursday at Salem District Court.
The 19-year-old from Danvers was killed last June when the car he was riding in slammed into a tow truck in Salem.
The driver of the car, 25-year-old Angelique Griffin, was drunk, according to police and charged with vehicular homicide.
She was sentenced Thursday to two-and-a-half years in prison. She must serve a minimum of two years.
As the judge handed down the sentence, there were outbursts from Renard's family and some needed to be escorted from the courtroom by guards.
Griffin received the maximum sentence as part of a plea agreement, but Renard's family says the punishment is just a "slap on the wrist."
They want to legislators to pass "Dillon's Law," which would raise the minimum sentence for vehicular homicide. Currently it's just 30 days.
"Dillon got a life sentence when he got in the car that day," Renard's aunt Marilyn Rubner told WBZ-TV. "She should too."
"He was a good kid, he was a funny kid. He was so full of life. It's never going to be the same for our family again and we just want her to pay."
