Danny O'Connor On Toucher & Rich: Bringing Boxing Back To Boston
Framingham native Danny O'Connor started boxing at 15-years-old and is making a name for himself in the boxing world. This southpaw light welterweight boasts a 16-1 record with four knockouts.
On May 24th, O'Connor will take on New York's Daniel "The Hudson Valley Kid" Sostre in 10-round contest. This will be the first professional boxing card at the Boston House of Blues.
O'Connor joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich to talk about getting into boxing and what it was like the first time he sparred.
"In a city with such history like Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler and some of the greats of old, I think they're looking for a new person to get behind and support. That's what I'm trying to do, trying to be that new person and bring the sport of boxing back to Boston."
In a world where it seems boxing is becoming a forgotten sport, due to the interest in MMA among other things, what is it about boxing that drew O'Connor in?
"Boxing was a self chosen sport for me, I just loved it. I chose to go to the gym for the first time, as soon as I picked up a pair of gloves I never wanted to put them down."
O'Connor agrees that boxing has fallen off the map a little, but believes he knows what the sports needs to jump start it back into mainstream popularity.
"They haven't had that one star that everyone's excited to get behind and support. That's my goal, to bring the sports of boxing back and to be that star that everyone supports and get excited to come watch a fight."
