Dangers Remain After $23 Million Upgrade To Danvers Intersection
DANVERS (CBS) - It's a dangerous intersection that's already received a $23 million dollar upgrade, but safety officials say the number of accident are still increasing.
"It's extremely frustrating. I travel a half hour to get him and it takes me 10 minutes to get to my house when I am 300 feet away," Danvers resident Rick Gauthier said.
Gauthier lives right next to the Routes 128 and 62 intersection on Elliot Street.
It's an area that has turned into a logistical nightmare for folks who drive and live in the area.
"One month I counted at least 10 accidents," Danvers resident Denise Randizzo said.
Folks say it's hard for people to gauge when to go and the lights are out of sync.
"It's just too many light and they are not timed properly. I've seen people try to go left, right straight and it's just chaos," Gauthier said.
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation is working to make more improvements.
"The initial attempt at addressing the area was to modernize it to make it more efficient and safer. But sometimes it's not always the case," MassDOT spokesperson Michael Verseckes said.
MassDOT has just completed a full road safety audit of the area.
"It gives us a chance to go back and take a second look at it. We can now re-analyze what we've done and make some changes for the better and improve the situation that exist now, " Verseckes said.
Residents hope these changes come soon.
"I say they get it right this time," Randizzo said.
