Daily Talker: Are Deliveries By Drone Too Dangerous?
Amazon is looking to the future of Internet shopping. Instead of arriving by delivery truck, some day your order could land on your doorstep via drone.
On Sunday's 60 Minutes, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos revealed an R&D project called Prime Air that had been kept a secret until now. He told correspondent Charlie Rose he hopes drones could handle deliveries within 10 miles of fulfillment centers for orders up to five pounds, and do it within 30 minutes.
"You give 'em instructions of which GPS coordinates to go to, and they take off and they fly to those GPS coordinates," Bezos told Rose. But he admits there are challenges.
"The hard part here is putting in all the redundancy, all the reliability, all the systems you need to say, 'Look, this thing can't land on somebody's head while they're walking around their neighborhood,'" said Bezos. He says more testing is needed, as well as approvals from the FAA, so drone deliveries are still several years away.
