Curry College Nursing Student Killed In Canton Crash
CANTON (CBS) – The Curry College community is mourning the loss of a student killed in a car crash in Canton.
Evan Bard, 20, of Agawam died in the Canton crash.
Bard was in her junior year and was studying nursing. She was also on the school's cheerleading squad.
The District Attorney's office reports that Bard was a passenger in a car that slammed into a wall and a tree on Bolivar Road in Canton just after midnight.
The driver, who has not been identified, suffered head injuries and was taken to Boston Medical Center. Investigators have not determined the cause of the crash.
Bard was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It was so terrifying. It was something I've never seen in my life, and I wish I didn't see it," said neighbor Fred Brodie, who heard the crash from inside his home then saw the wrecked car in his front yard.
Curry College cheerleading coach Nicole Bello placed flowers at the crash scene Saturday.
Bello said she will miss Bard's energetic personality and hard work ethic, both on and off the mat. "Her life goal was to be a nurse. She was an unbelievable kid. An unreal cheerleader. She had the best personality," Bello said.
Chris Milone is a senior at Curry College. "It was the last day of finals (Friday) and it's just a day before Mother's Day. I can't even imagine how the family must feel," Milone said.
Curry College released a statement mourning the loss of Bard.
"The Curry College community sends our thoughts and prayers to Evan's family and friends. Our hearts go out to them at this difficult time," the statement said in part.
The school reported it has set up grief counseling services for any affected students and staff members.
"The Bard Family would like to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers which mean so much during this difficult time. They also would like to thank Evan's teachers, classmates, and teammates for making her time at Curry a happy one," the school's statement added.
