Curious Why Some Towns Get So Much More Rain

The lack of rain has many people wondering what is going on this summer.
Jim from Natick Declared his Curiosity to WBZ:
"Since June 1, we've received less than 1.3 inches of rain. Our ponds and streams are rapidly drying up, our lawns are brown, and we can't remember a recent drought like this. Watching the weather, it seems to rain much more frequently in surrounding local areas. Are we unique?"
WBZ meteorlogist Jim Joyce said this has been a big problem across MetroWest, where several people say the thunderstorms have been missing them.
Sometimes it's just a matter of luck – if getting rain means getting lucky.
Since June 1st, Boston has had 6.9 inches of rain and Worcester 7.5 inches. 3.8 inches have fallen in Bedford and 3.2 in Norwood. They all surround Natick and it's meager 1.3 inches.
However, a WBZ weather watcher from Natick has reported about 7.25 inches of rain on his property since June 1st.
Why?
It could just be a matter of neighborhoods.
It all depends on where you are.
Joyce says there could also be a rain shadow effect. As the air comes off the Worcester hills in the west, it dries out a bit.
So is it a drought?
Not officially. It is abnormally dry, but so far for the year we're still averaging slightly above normal in terms of total precipitation.
