Curious Why Bikers Ride In The Middle Of The Road
WBZ
The death of a cyclist on a busy Boston street is one reason why Boston Mayor Tom Menino organized his first ever bicycling safety summit Wednesday night, but there's still not peace between drivers and bikers.
WBZ gets lots of curiosities on this topic.
Jim from Everett Declared his Curiosity:
"Why do we have to have bikes in the middle of the road?"
As David Wade found out, some cyclists say they have no where else to go.
The amount of curiosities from drivers wondering why bikers are in the middle of the road are basically equal to the ones WBZ gets from cyclists who are tired of drivers.
Gary Smiley bikes everywhere. He says it's a game of dodge this and dodge that.
On Cambridge Street, the roadway looks like ground beef all shredded up.
Up the road a piece, WBZ found a bike lane, which looked like death valley.
Gary sees it all. "A combination of potholes, vertical grooves down the road, drivers flinging car doors open people double parking in the bike lane "
Road crews don't seem to rush to fix the sides of the roads either, which means cyclists end up in traffic.
At the mayor's bike summit, Menino said he wants city streets to be less scary. "Bikes and cars can coexist," said Menino.
Boston is going to start giving $100 fines for drivers who block bike lanes.
That will help, but most towns don't have bike lanes and bike paths are few and far between. "We are going to have to share the roads and deal with hit," said Smiley.
