Curious About Qaddafi, Khadafy, Gadhafi?
I am curious as to the correct spelling of the name of the leader of Libya. CBS uses Qaddafi. The Boston Globe uses Khadafy. The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro uses Gadhafi. The only thing they are consistent about is Moammar. - Tom
The difficulty here is due to the fact that there's no one accepted authority for translating Arabic names into English. So different organizations use different spellings. At WBZ-TV we use- Qaddafi.
I found at least a dozen spellings. Here are 2 to add to Tom's list- Qaddhafi and Ghadafi.
Many Libyans would like to refer to the dictator with a word starting with "G" --Gone.
