Curious About Grooved Pavement And Tire Damage
WBZ
It seems like just about every road and highway is being worked on these days.
Those rough roads and bone jarring ruts are making some drivers worried about the impact on their cars.
One woman told us, "I am nervous my tires are going to pop."
Dave from Gardner Declared his Curiosity to WBZ:
"How much faster does driving on grooved pavement wear down my tires compared to normal pavement?"
"I wouldn't worry about it all," said Boston Volvo Village Service Manager Mike LaBrecque.
He added that today's tires are engineered to resist that kind of wear and tear.
Another driver told us he worries about raised manhole covers at construction sights.
"They come up so fast and you can't get around, and that worries me about the tires."
LaBrecque agreed those manhole covers, as well as raised storm drains, are the real danger.
He said they have plenty of cars coming in with blown tires after going over one of those too fast.
"They paint the perimeter orange, but sometimes they are unavoidable."
The grooves are put in the pavement to help the final layer of asphalt dry properly, without cracking.
The most important thing you can do to prolong the life of your tires is to make sure they are properly inflated, and that you get them rotated regularly.
