Dog killed by coyotes at Hopkinton walking trail
HOPKINTON - A Westboro family is mourning the death of their tiniest member. Six-year-old Harry, the family dog, was killed by coyotes in Hopkinton Thursday. Now Harry's owners are warning neighbors to keep their pets close.
Wherever the Hubbard family went Harry the six-year-old Cavapoo was in tow. "He went to the WooSox game with us ironically on Wednesday night," says Harry's owner, David Hubbard.
What David Hubbard and his wife Liza didn't know is it would be the last trip Harry would ever take. "Those were our last pictures of Harry, we're hanging at the WooSox game," said Hubbard.
Thursday afternoon Harry went for his usual walk along Whisper Way trails in Hopkinton. "My wife likes to go on walks... She likes to bring the dog. They were probably a half hour into their walk and the dog jetted off into the woods and whenever he does that normally he comes back," said Hubbard.
But this time Harry didn't return.
"She heard yelping in the woods. She became concerned and started trying to find him," said Hubbard.
Liza Hubbard searched for hours with help from the local Hopkinton police department.
"An animal control officer came and were outstanding in their compassion and support," said Hubbard.
But ultimately Liza was the one to find Harry the dog had been attacked and killed by a coyote.
"She went and got blankets and things to bring his body out of the woods," said Hubbard.
This isn't the first coyote attack this week. Just days ago, a dog was taken from its owner in Milford, and in Fall River, a woman was hospitalized after a coyote bit her, as she walked her dog.
"These are pack animals and we're encroaching on their turf at this point," said Hubbard.
The Hopkinton police released safety tips in case of a coyote encounter including to keep your dog on a leash, carry a walking stick and if you do see coyotes make a lot of noise.
