Courtroom Scuffle Erupts After Prosecutor Details Man Was Stabbed 69 Times
A family member of victim Ronald Russo, 50, rushed the bench after the prosecutor accused Peter Deconinck, 46, of stabbing Russo 69 times during a fight Saturday night.
That family member - Thomas Russo - was later arraigned in the same court for resisting arrest and disturbing the courtroom. A judge ordered him released on personal recognizance so he could plan his brother's funeral arrangements.
Neither the victim nor the defendant lived at the scene, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.
A man who had spent the evening with Deconinck and Russo told investigators the three had been drinking together and had several physical altercations during the course of the evening, prosecutors said.
The man said he briefly left the room and returned to find Deconinck and Russo fighting and that each had a knife in his hand.
He told police that he fled the trailer in fear at that time.
Deconinck was arrested in the area of Beachmont station a short time after the stabbing with blood on his clothing and a laceration to his hand, the DA says.
Prosecutors said Deconinck told police he was stabbed or shot in the leg as he left the trailer, and he denied killing Russo.
Thomas Russo was tackled by four court officers and taken out of the courtroom. One court officer was hurt and taken to the hospital.
The arraignment was halted for about 10 minutes.
Bail for Deconinck was set at $1 million cash.
