Second Needham High School Student Dies Following Crash
NEEDHAM (CBS) - A second Needham High School student has died after both girls were hit by a car on Saturday.
Talia Newfield and Adrienne Garrido were hit by a car near Webster and Holland streets in Needham around 5 p.m. on Saturday, just steps from their school.
Newfield died as a result of her injuries and Garrido was hospitalized before she died a day later.
Both girls were juniors at Needham High.
"The suddenness, and also the severity of the loss was too much," said Pastor Jim Mitulski from the Congregational Church of Needham.
Needham High School opened its doors on Sunday to allow students to come together and speak with counselors.
For two hours Sunday morning, the high school's guidance department and staff from the Needham Youth and Family Services and Riverside Community Care Center were available.
"Saturday night's accident on Webster Street took the lives of two amazing and loving young people, Adrienne and her friend Talia Newfield. I am at a loss for words at the moment, but I wanted you to know this information," Superintendent of Schools Daniel Gutekanst said in a letter to the community.
The driver is cooperating with police and has not been charged at this time.
"It's just going to impact us for the rest of our lives," classmate Ben Aliber said.
Counselors will be on hand as students return to school Monday.
