Cooling Off...
We enjoyed a taste of Summer today with highs reaching the middle and upper 70s...Boston touched 74 just before 1PM. The warmth is about to be swept out to sea however s a coldfront slices through the Northeast. Along this front there is a band of briefly heavy rain and downpours...maybe even a flash lightning too. The line of heavier rain will be through the area by midnight. A sharp midlevel shortwave will spin up a small area of low pressure along the front after it passes slowing the departure of wet weather and scattered showers will be seen from midnight through early tomorrow morning. I the wake of the shortwave, gusty NW winds will pick up and dry us out...this will lead to ample sunshine from mid-morning until sunset (which BTW is at 6PM, the last in the 6's for a long time). Temperatures will be a far cry from today's lofty 70s, but nothing extreme, highs should be either side of 60.
The middle of the week looks lovely...high pressure will lead to lots of sunshine and temps will top out in the middle 60s on Wednesday and upper 60s on Thursday.
While we are seeing the sun middle of the week, another trough will be digging into and cutting off over the Great Lakes. This will produce a healthy surface low with rain and wind in that region. It will be very slow to move east but will inch our way on Friday. The core of the storm should stay to our west then travel north keeping us on the warmer side of the system. Clouds will spread in Friday morning and a cold or occluded front will work in for later in the day and night producing more heavy rain and strong gusty wind. The upper level system is expected to slide by on Saturday, this should keep things a bit unsettled with scattered showers but the heavy convective / overrunning rain should be gone for the majority of Saturday and the rest of the weekend appears dry with seasonable temps in the 60s.
