Convicted Plymouth Marine Returns To Brig
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (AP) - A Camp Pendleton Marine has been returned to custody serve out the remainder of a prison sentence following reinstatement of his conviction in the murder of an Iraqi man.
Lt. Col. Joseph Kloppel confirmed Friday that Sgt. Lawrence Hutchins III is back in the brig.
Prosecutors say the 26-year-old Hutchins led a squad that dragged a retired Iraqi policeman from his home and killed him in the village of Hamdania in 2006.
Hutchins was convicted of murder but was released last year when a military court overturned the conviction because his lead defense lawyer quit shortly before the trial began.
The military's highest court subsequently reinstated the conviction.
The Marine from Plymouth, Mass., has five years left on his 11-year sentence.
