Global petroleum wants to increase the amount of ethanol it transports to its terminal in Revere, and one of the options is to bring it there by train.
"Don't want them at all," said one Revere resident. "Don't need them in our area."
The company already uses barges and trucks, but they can only carry so much. Trains could deliver an extra 30,000 gallons of ethanol per week to the area.
State Rep. Kathi-Anne Reinstein is not comfortable with the plan, which she an excessive risk that sacrifices public safety to profit a billion dollar company.
"I don't believe there's any data that's been done in an urban setting, so now you have these very highly flammable trains coming in and then being off-loaded in a very urban area that's already very congested," said Rep. Reinstein.
Beacon Hill lawmakers have passed a plan to examine potential public safety impacts of ethanol trains running through densely populated areas.
