Colvin: Without Tom Brady, Richard Sherman Wouldn't Be Relevant
BOSTON (CBS) -- The last time the Patriots and Seahawks met, Richard Sherman had one question for Tom Brady.
"You mad, bro?" Sherman asked Brady after his Seahawks beat New England 24-23 at CenturyLink Field.
That comment made Sherman a star, and he's continued to be a media sensation with other postgame outbursts. He took to Twitter to expand on his postgame Brady comments in 2012, and then there was his glowing review of Michael Crabtree following Seattle's NFC Championship game win over the San Francisco 49ers last year.
Sherman's comments to Brady were brought up this week, as the two teams prepare to face off in Super Bowl XLIX next Sunday. The corner said Brady isn't the model citizen that everyone thinks he is on the field, and he's hoping Brady throws his way in the Super Bowl.
Former Patriot Rosevelt Colvin joined 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich on Friday to talk about the Brady-Sherman exchange, and said if it wasn't for Brady, Sherman wouldn't be the star he is today.
"Just like Ray Lewis said, 'Without the tuck rule we wouldn't know Tom Brady.' Well, we wouldn't know who Richard Sherman is without Tom Brady saying, 'See me after the game' and Sherman going up and saying ,'You mad, bro?,'" said Colvin. "At the end of the day, Richard Sherman owes Tom Brady half his contract, because without Tom he wouldn't even be relevant right now.
"Richard Sherman, in my opinion, does a lot of talking to create buzz and create a sort of 'Listen to what I have to say.' Which is today's society with Twitter and social media. At the end of the day cut the check and that's what he's been able to do," added Colvin.
Colvin said he never got into it with Brady during his time with the Chicago Bears, but began to respect the QB after playing against him.
"It was more, 'This is the pedestal the NFL has put this guy on and I'm going to knock him off of it.' I think that's what Richard Sherman and those guys [were thinking] at that point in time when they played Tom and he was probably going back and forth with them [in 2012]," said Colvin.
As for the Super Bowl, Colvin thinks the matchup favors the Patriots.
"Two years ago or last year, even three weeks ago, the Seahawks were on a high. They have been exposed in some of the things they weren't doing last year. This year, the defense is still very stout, but some people have exposed them in different areas," he said. "They played very well down the stretch but they have some guys who are nicked up which will affect the game."
Colvin says Sherman's sprained elbow could be a big factor in the game.
