Colombian Wins Cliff Diving Competition In Boston Harbor

BOSTON (CBS) -- The Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series on Sunday drew hundreds of boats and thousands of spectators to the Institute of Contemporary Art, where 14 of world's best cliff divers descended from a platform 90 feet above Boston Harbor at speeds of up to 50 mph.

Ten-time World Champion Orlando Duque took first place, Russia's Artem Silchenko secured second and the United Kingdom's Gary Hunt came from behind to lock down third.

It was the conclusion of a whirlwind week for Duque, who performed a helicopter dive in front of the Statue of Liberty last Monday, then dived under a full moon in Greece before coming to Boston to notch his first win of 2013. "It was a crazy week that started with one of the coolest things I've done in my life and ended with the best competition I've had the whole year," the Colombian said. "It was super close all the way up to the last dive and everyone was diving so well that anybody could have won."

Winning dives this year included Duque's back triple somersault plus triple twist pike with little to no splash as well as a backward handstand leading to a two and half somersault with a two twist ending in a free position by Silchenko.

Americans David Colturi and Steven LoBue posted sixth and seventh place finishes.

U.S. diving legend and Olympic gold medalist Greg Louganis was among the judges for the competition.

The next stop on the tour is South Wales in the United Kingdom, with the final stop in Thailand in late October.
