Colder Air On The Move...
SW flow aloft up the east coast is steering a significant plume of moisture up the East coast today but the rain is mostly moving offshore. Showers will come awfully close to Nantucket, but the rest of the region will remain dry and cloudy under a blanket of overcast which has moved in for the rest of the day. Highs will be in the Lwr 40's. A thinner overcast in the north and west where there will be some partial sunshine. As the front offshore continues to meander east, there should be some late day clearing from west to east. So there is the chance for late breaks of sun right at the coast.
Meanwhile, a cold front is pushing into Northern New England later today. This will be triggering mountain snow showers and flurries as it moves through. Behind this front colder air will be pushing into New England overnight with clearing skies and breezy WNW winds. Lows will be dropping into the teens and lwr-mid 20's at the coast after midnight. The front will get a bit hung up over SNE Monday. There is the potential for a few low clouds under 850 mb, so partly sunny skies are likely Monday with much colder NW winds keeping highs in the lwr-mid 30's at the coast, while farther inland like SNH and NW MA will remain in the 20's. Some of the coldest air since December 2011.
The front will finally push off the coast Monday with building high barometer cold for Monday night. Lows will drop into the single digits and teens for sunrise Tuesday morning. A frigid start to Super Tuesday! Sunshine and light winds with the heart of the cold lifting out will allow temps to moderate into the mid-upper 30's by afternoon.
The deep trough on the east coast will be pulling away Tuesday with a developing upper level ridge on the east coast. High pressure parked off the coast will begin to wrap in much warmer air from the midwest allowing temps to climb into the 50's to near 60 for Wednesday and into the Lwr 60's by Thursday. Clouds will begin to increase ahead of advancing front which will move in for Friday with an increased risk of rain. SW winds ahead of the front will keep it mild in the 50's despite the unsettled wet weather. Once the front pushes off the coast Friday night, cooler seasonal high pressure will return from Canada bringing temps down into the 30's with increasing sunshine for next weekend.
