2 Dead After Plane Crashes Onto Cape Cod Beach
YARMOUTH (CBS) - Two people were killed when a small plane crashed onto a beach off St. Landing's Road in Brewster on Sunday.
A 73-year-old man from Edgartown and a 68-year-old man from Falmouth were killed in the crash. The names of the two victims were not immediately released.
The small plane with a flight instructor and student pilot on board was on a flight from Martha's Vineyard to Hyannis Sunday morning.
WBZ-TV's Jim Smith reports.
The pilot was practicing holding patterns when it went down in the water along the beach.
Air traffic controllers said the crew reported smoke on the plane before 10 a.m. Then, a short time later, they lost contact with the pilot.
The bodies of the victims were discovered Sunday afternoon.
"We were able to retrieve one deceased person at the scene. Shortly thereafter, a second deceased was located," said Lt. Heath Eldredge of the Brewster Police Department. "In addition, some minor aircraft debris was located in the area."
Crews dealt with bitter cold temperatures and rough seas during their search.
The plane is registered to someone from East Falmouth, but it's not known if they are connected to either of the victims.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
