Ice Climber Killed In Mount Washington Avalanche
NORTH CONWAY, NH (CBS) – A climber was killed in an avalanche in Huntington Ravine on Mount Washington in New Hampshire on Friday.
A spokesperson for White Mountain National Forest identified the victim as James Watts, 24, of New York.
Officials say Watts was solo ice climbing Pinnacle Gully in Huntington Ravine on Friday without ropes when the avalanche was triggered.
No one else was believed to be in the area at the time.
A hiker discovered Watts' body around 3 p.m. Friday more than 1,000 feet below the gully.
U.S. Forest Service Snow Rangers, a Mountain Rescue Service member, and the Harvard and Hermit Lake caretakers all helped recover the body.
"Our sympathies go out to the family and friends of Mr. Watt," Lead Snow Ranger Chris Joosen said in a news release.
