Chocolate Milk Ban At New Bedford School Creates Black Market For Syrup
NEW BEDFORD (CBS) - A ban on chocolate milk has teenagers turning to the black market in New Bedford.
According to the Standard Times, students at Greater New Bedford Vocational-Technical High School are now buying smuggled-in chocolate syrup and paying 50 cents for a squeeze to liven up their white milk.
Flavored milk and several other unhealthy foods were banned at the beginning of this school year.
"Of course they got rid of dessert, (but) flavored milk ... I don't understand why we can't have that," one student told the paper.
Newly revised state nutrition standards for school foods went into effect this year and they encourage schools to gradually phase out "sweetened, flavored milk."
