Hit-And-Run Driver Leaves Teen Seriously Hurt In Methuen

METHUEN (CBS) - Police said a hit-and-run driver left a Methuen high school student seriously injured early Monday morning.

It happened at Lowell and Capitol Streets around 6:30 a.m. as 15-year-old Joe Barry attempted to board a school bus.

Police named 28-year-old Robert Jacques, of Lowell, a "person of interest" in the hit-and-run and arrested him Monday afternoon on an unrelated warrant, officials said.

Investigators say the bus was stopped and its warning lights were flashing when a pickup truck struck Barry, hit another vehicle and then took off. Investigators say the truck is owned by Jacques's father. Jacques seemed remorseful when he turned himself into police, WBZ NewsRadio 1030's Lana Jones said.

Methuen's school superintendent told reporters that students rushed off the bus immediately to help the Barry after he was hit.

He was brought to Boston Children's Hospital on a medical rescue helicopter.  He had broken bones, but was conscious and in stable condition when he was taken to the hospital.

Barry's family released a statement Monday night saying he would have surgery on Tuesday or Wednesday.

"Joe is a wonderful young man. He is a straight A student, he is deeply compassionate, and we are proud of him. While the road to recovery is going to be long and difficult, we are profoundly grateful to have this chance. This has been a traumatic experience for our family. We appreciate all of outpouring of support and we ask that you respect our desire for privacy as we begin to navigate the healing process."
