Chelmsford Bank Robbery Suspect Crashes After High Speed Police Chase
BEDFORD (CBS) – A bank robbery suspect was arrested on Thursday following a police pursuit that ended in a Bedford crash.
Thursday morning, police tracked a suspect to Nashua, N.H., who was allegedly involved in a Wednesday bank robbery at Citizen's Bank in Chelmsford.
But while an officer was driving to Nashua, he recognized the suspect's vehicle on Route 3 in Chelmsford.
Police said the officer began to follow the suspect, but the man refused to stop.
According to police, Jason Jewett, 38, of Littleton, led police on a high speed chase until he crashed into a tree on Middlesex Turnpike in Bedford, just over the Billerica line.
Jewett was seriously injured in the crash and was taken to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Littleton resident is charged with operating a motor vehicle after license revocation, operating to endanger, failure to stop for law enforcement, and marked lanes violation.
In addition, charges related to the Chelmsford Citizens Bank robbery are still pending, police said.
"I am proud to have such strong working partnerships with our neighbors, and I want to thank the Billerica Police Department for their assistance in locating and capturing this suspect," Chelmsford Police Chief James Spinney said. "This suspect was desperate to get away, but a careful and measured police response during the pursuit prevented injury to any civilians, regardless of the suspect's intent."
