Chatham Gets A Foot Of Snow
CHATHAM (CBS) -- Cape Cod is back on its feet Tuesday evening, after enduring a knockdown punch from winter Monday.
Chatham got a foot of snow, straining the town's budget for snow removal. "We budgeted $71,000," says DPW head Jeff Colby," and we used up some of that, but we've got enough left for a couple more."
WBZ-TV's Bill Shields reports.
By the morning, the roads were clear of snow, thanks to a long night of work from the sand crews, but a lot of it was overtime.
"This time of year, buying presents and all, it definitely helps," said John Williams, as he loaded up his truck with salt and sand one more time.
Out on North Beach, huge waves were pounding the summer cottages that have already been decimated by erosion.
Chatham's Natural Resources Director was concerned. "I think the writing is on the wall," said Ted Keon. "There used to be some protective dunes there, but they're gone, and the cottages are now exposed."
In Chatham center, shoppers were back out in force Tuesday, just days before Christmas...and seemed to be enjoying the fresh blanket of white. "It's the season for snow!" said one shopper. "So let it!"
