Chatham beach reopens after shark scare
The popular Lighthouse Beach on Cape Cod has reopened to swimmers after authorities failed to spot a 14-foot great white shark that some sailors had reported seeing inside the harbor.
Chatham Harbormaster Stuart Smith says swimming resumed at the harbor Friday afternoon, a day after the reported shark sighting prompted authorities to launch two boats and a plane to search for the predator.
Swimming resumed just in time for visitors to the popular tourist destination to enjoy the waters.
Authorities believe the shark was probably hunting for seals in the area.
Smith says authorities continue to keep an eye on things and will put out an advisory if they need to.
Five miles of beach in Chatham were closed earlier this month after several great white sharks were spotted.
