Charlie Davies Continues Amazing Comeback, Debuts For Revolution

BOSTON (CBS) - Former Boston College soccer star Charlie Davies is back home, now a member of the New England Revolution.

Davies made his Revolution debut in Saturday night's 2-0 win over the Chicago Fire in the 79th minute, logging 11 minutes for his hometown team.

But for the 27-year-old Manchester, New Hampshire native, it's been a long road back to the soccer field. In October of 2009 while in Washington DC for a World Cup Qualifying game, Davies was a passenger in a tragic car accident that killed a 22-year-old woman in the car and left him badly hurt. He suffered a fractured tibia and febur, a fractured right elbow, a lacerated bladder, and bleeding on the brain.

What followed what more than a year of rehabilitation for Davies.

"I couldn't put on own clothes, walk, or use my left arm," he told WBZ-TV's Levan Reid after a Revs practice earlier this week.

But he was determined to return to the game he loved.

"From day one I started doing the little things, just standing up for 20-30 seconds. I would get really dizzy and have to sit back down; that was my first rehab," he said.

Davies returned to his team, French club Sochaux, in December of 2010. He was then loaned to the D.C. United for the 2011 season, where he scored 11 goals in 26 games, and returned to Sochaux for the 2011-12 season before being moved to Denmark's Randers FC.

He's yet to find a permanent home on the soccer field since the accident, but now the perfect situation has arrived. Two weeks ago he was loaned to the Revs from Randers, with New England holding an option to purchase his contract for next season.

He's finally home again, both on the field and off of it.

"To be able to still play the sport I grew up loving, and now on top of that playing in my hometown... I'm really excited," he said. "For me, it's just a blessing to wake up every day."
