Candle Causes Charlestown Fire That Injures 1 Child, 2 Adults
BOSTON (CBS) – Three people, including a child, were taken to the hospital after an overnight apartment fire in Charlestown. It happened around 1:30 a.m. on Tufts Street.
Their injuries are considered non-life threatening.
The fire department believes it all began when a candle was accidentally knocked over in a second-floor apartment. The fire was contained to that unit, seriously damaging four rooms.
"When I looked outside, all I saw was an explosion," said Jwuan Simmons, he lives across the street. "The people from the apartment were coming outside, running, coughing. It was really scary. It was really sad too."
Six apartments in all were affected. The building belongs to the Boston Housing Authority.
Betty Simensen lives next door."My son said 'get up, get up, get up.' He said there's a fire. I was shocked more than anything," she said.
Residents who live in the damaged area were relocated.
The fire caused about $500,000 in damage.
