Pierce Not Playing In Celtics Preseason Opener

BOSTON (CBS) - The Boston Celtics will be without captain Paul Pierce when they kick off the preseason Sunday against the Toronto Raptors.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers announced Thursday Pierce will sit out the preseason opener because of a sore right heel. He will likely sit out of practices until Monday.

"Paul will be out until around Monday," Doc said. "That's what (trainer) Eddie (Lacerte) said. He thought he could possibly play, but why take the chance going from no practice to playing in an exhibition game. So, we're probably going to leave him back."

Dr. Rivers Gives An Injury Update

Rajon Rondo is set to test his sprained right ankle on Thursday, and will likely join the team for Sunday's game. Whether he plays is in the exhibition game still remains up in the air.

"Rondo is going through stuff today, but I'm not going to let him go through anything live," said Rivers. "For the open scrimmage tomorrow, we'll see. Rondo may play Sunday, but I don't know that."
