Celtics Will Reportedly Play Knicks On Christmas Day
BOSTON (CBS) -- The Boston Celtics have been able to enjoy Christmas Day with their families the last few years, but that will all reportedly change in the upcoming season.
According to Kevin O'Connor (now of The Ringer), the Celtics will take on the Knicks in New York on the league's marquee day. It's the first time the Celtics will have a Christmas Day game since the 2012 season, when Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo led Boston to a road victory over the Brooklyn Nets.
The Celtics and Knicks last had a Christmas Day matchup in 2011, when New York beat Boston 106-104 thanks to 37 points by Carmelo Anthony. As for this year's potential matchup, both are enticing teams for the NBA to show off on Christmas Day. The 48-win Celtics added free agent Al Horford to the mix, while the Knicks went out and acquired both Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah in hopes of turning the franchise around.
The Celtics own an overall record of 12-17 on Christmas. All but one of those 29 contests have been played on the road, as Celtics patriarch Red Auerbach did not want the Boston staff to have to work a home game on the holiday.
