Paul Pierce Wins Second Red Auerbach Award
BOSTON (CBS) - Paul Pierce had to wait a few extra days, but he was finally handed his second Red Auerbach Award prior to Sunday's 107-96 win over the Washington Wizards.
The award -- named after the legendary coach, president and general manager of the Boston Celtics -- has been presented each year since the 2005-06 season to the Celtics player or coach who best exemplifies the spirit of what it means to be a Celtics both on and off the court.
"It's an honor to receive that award for somebody who best represents the Celtics on and off the court. It really says a lot about the things I've done on and off the court," Pierce said after Sunday night's win. "With Red's name on it, I was able to receive the first one. To receive another one, it's a true honor."
Pierce won the inaugural Red Auberback award, and joins Kevin Garnett (who won the award in 2008 and 2012) as the only other two-time winner.
Al Jefferson (2007), Ray Allen (2009), Rajon Rondo (2010) and coach Doc Rivers (2011) are the other members of the Celtics to win the award.
Pierce was originally supposed to receive the award prior to Friday's loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers, but was postponed as Pierce missed the game with a sore right ankle.
