'Careless Disposal Of Smoking Materials' Likely Cause Of Nine-Alarm Allston Fire
BOSTON (CBS) – Fire investigators have determined that careless disposal of smoking material was the likely cause of a nine-alarm fire that displaced dozens of residents in the Allston neighborhood of Boston last month.
The Boston Fire Department said on Friday that a cigar or cigarette was discarded in a staircase of the Harvard Terrace apartment building, likely causing the massive fire on Sept. 3.
Two firefighters were transported to area hospitals as a result of the fire, one with smoke inhalation and one with a shoulder injury.
In addition, three other firefighters were treated at the scene and two bystanders were also treated for injuries.
It was the first nine-alarm fire in Boston since the fatal Back Bay blaze that killed two firefighters in March.
