Carbon Monoxide Detected In Roxbury Church, 7 People Hospitalized

BOSTON (CBS) -- Seven people at St. John Missionary Baptist Church in Roxbury were taken to the hospital Sunday for possible carbon monoxide poisoning.

Parishioners were feeding the homeless in the basement of the church when a young woman first fell ill.

"She began to vomit and she sit down and kind of passed out," said trustee chair Clarence Harrell, who called 911.

When firefighters arrived, their carbon monoxide sensors recorded dangerously high levels.

"We would have never known this," Harrell said. "You can't taste, smell or see this."

All seven who were hospitalized were later released. Firefighters say the heating system is to blame.

Church service will still be held Sunday despite having to turn off the heat.
