Driver Killed After Car Plunges Off Whittier Bridge
AMESBURY (CBS/AP) - State Police say a driver was killed after a car plunged off an Interstate 95 bridge and into the Merrimack River Monday night.
Police received reports of a car going off the northbound side of the Whittier Bridge on the Amesbury-Newburyport line at about 8:15 p.m.
WBZ-TV's Jonathan Elias reports
After a search involving state police, the Coast Guard and local authorities, the submerged vehicle with a body inside was found at about 11:30 p.m.
The body was turned over to the medical examiner's office.
The victim's name has not been released.
The cause of the crash is still not known, but witnesses say the driver was speeding before crashing into the river.
The car remains in the river. Dive teams resumed recovery efforts Tuesday morning.
