Car Crash Kills Avon Student Who Had Beaten Cancer

AVON (CBS) - Grief counselors were on hand at Avon High School Friday to help students deal with the death of a popular student.

Nick Watson, whose nickname among friends was "Superman," was on the baseball team and had beaten cancer last year with the help of his family, friends and classmates.

But on Wednesday night, he was killed when his car veered off the road and hit a rock.

"Very well liked, great young man, funny, and the kids' faces light up when they talk about him," said Avon High School's Principal Sharon Hansen. From my teachers who were tutoring him at home, very brave. There were times when he didn't feel well enough to be tutored."

Nick's cancer was in remission. He had just turned 16 and didn't have a yet have his license.

Many kids at the school are struggling to figure out how this could happen.

"Your heart tells you it's not supposed to happen but your mind tells you that stuff like this does happen," said Hansen.
