Cape Police Worried About Teens Using Social Media To Party
COHASSET (CBS) -- "House parties are always a problem -- in cities and in small towns," says Cohasset Police Chief Mark DeLuca.
In the latest chapter of kids breaking into homes and partying, Cohasset police busted 10 kids Saturday night, at a summer home on Whitehead Road. They were charged with minor in possession.
But what concerns police is the social media involved. "Texting is a huge problem," says DeLuca, "because the party can become huge within minutes. And there's always a tragedy when this stuff happens."
WBZ-TV's Bill Shields reports.
Last week in Scituate, a home was broken into by kids who threw a party inside. When police were called, one girl was injured when she tried to jump a fence, and she was impaled in the leg.
The Scituate home is on Kent Street, and at least one neighbor is concerned about it. "The owners, or whoever lived there, walked away months ago," said Robin Gallagher, "and I'm constantly picking up beer cans there, and trying to keep an eye on it."
Police say the number of foreclosed homes, and unoccupied summer homes are a lure for kids to party, and now it's entering the prom season.
"I just hope parents keep a close eye on their kids and their friends," says DeLuca, "because we can have a catastrophe this time of year."
