Cape Cod Teen Goes To Jail In Fatal Wheelchair Hit-And-Run
BARNSTABLE (AP) -- A Cape Cod teenager accused of fleeing the scene after her car struck and killed a 47-year-old woman crossing a street in her wheelchair has pleaded guilty and been sentenced to three years in jail.
Gina Giovangelo was also sentenced last week to five years of probation after pleading guilty in Barnstable Superior Court to motor vehicle homicide by negligent operation while operating under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.
Prosecutors say the 19-year-old Giovangelo had been drinking before she struck Lillian White as she crossed a Hyannis street in a crosswalk last May.
White's sister, Barbara Botteri, tells the Cape Cod Times that the sentence was "fair."
Giovangelo's family and lawyer could not be reached for comment.
