First Shark Of Season Pinged Off Cape Cod
CHATHAM (CBS) -- The first shark of the season has been detected off of Cape Cod--and his name is "Scratchy."
The great white shark was pinged swimming off of Monomoy Island by the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. The shark was tagged last August, and has apparently returned to the area.
The Massachusetts Department of Marine Fisheries said Scratchy was first identified in August of 2014. The 13-foot shark apparently got his name because he has "lots of seal scratches."
The AWSC said the shark was detected by their Shark Cove receiver. Last year, researchers tagged 19 sharks off the Massachusetts coast.
