Cape Cod Residents Collect Relief Supplies For Sandy Victims
CAPE COD (CBS) - The expectation was that Hurricane Sandy would batter Cape Cod and coastal Massachusetts. The reality was that New Jersey and New York took the worst damage, and now Cape Codders are looking to help the unfortunate people who have been put out by the storm.
Andy Buckley is leading an effort to bring a van full of relief supplies for storm victims in the New York City area. Everything from socks to baby wipes and toiletries to clothing will be headed for those most in need thanks to a grass roots efforts inspired by Buckley.
"We felt like we needed to do something," Buckley said. "Cape Codders like to take things into their own hands. We watched it and said, 'But for the grace of God, it could have been us.'"
Buckley will make the journey to New York with his 9-year-old daughter Sofie.
"Well, I feel really bad for the people of New York and the people of New Jersey, too," she said. "That everything was flooded - it's terrible."
Buckley thought he and his family could handle the job, but other members of the community quickly answered a call sent out through social media. Thankfully, Buckley was able to rent a cargo van thanks to the generosity of Vana and Guy Trudeau.
"We really appreciate what Andy and his family are doing for people in New York," Vana Trudeau said. "I have some extended family in that area and its great to rally community resources and sort of make it happen."
