Cape Cod Pie Company Relies On Disabled Workers
CENTERVILLE (CBS) -- A Cape Cod pie company is relying heavily on dozens of disabled adults to make thousands of pies this week in time for Thanksgiving.
Centerville Pie Company on Falmouth Road has more than 50 disabled workers working for them, according to the company's website. On Monday, they were diligently working to finish orders before the holiday on Thursday.
Kristen Broadley, baker and co-owner of Centerville Pie Company, says she depends on her small staff, which includes disabled adults who have worked there for years and have proven to be dedicated to their craft.
"I love Centerville Pie (Company's) pies," said one loyal worker. "I do. They make the best pies ever."
Staff have been working feverishly to make a few popular pies in particular for Thanksgiving.
"Apple and pumpkin," says Broadley. "They're just huge."
And while the pies are famously delicious and in high demand, Broadley says the company is more about the people than anything else.
"If we don't have a job, we'll create one to make it work," she says, adding that they have about three times the labor compared to the competition. "It's not always about the buck. It's about creating jobs, and that's what I'm trying to do.
"I'm not trying to become rich."
