Cape Cod Man Arrested On Drug Charges After Dog Was Found In Locked Car
BARNSTABLE (CBS) – A Cape Cod man was arrested on drug and animal cruelty charges after a Golden Retriever was found locked his unoccupied car Tuesday.
Barnstable Police officers found the dog while on patrol in the area of Cape Cod Community College at 2:30pm. Due to the 70 degree temperature, officers checked on the welfare of the dog, later identified as Cooper, and gave him water through a partially opened window.
A school police officer was contacted and identified the car's owner as 25-year-old Peter Giblin of North Eastham.
Giblin's last class of the day had ended at 12:45pm. Officers say they attempted to locate Giblin on campus and called his cell phone but he did not answer.
A Barnstable Animal Control officer responded and measured the temperature inside the Honda Civic at 106 degrees. Concerned for the animal's safety, officers opened the car and took control of the dog.
In the car, police say they located "in plain view" a mason jar with six bags of marijuana inside.
Officers say Giblin was uncooperative when he returned to his car about an hour later. He was charged with cruelty to animals and possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.
