Cambridge Police Seek Driver In Hit And Run Involving Elderly Woman In Wheelchair
CAMBRIDGE (CBS) - Cambridge police are asking for the public's help to identify a driver who struck an elderly woman in a wheelchair and then fled the scene of the crash.
Police say the 77-year-old woman was travelling in the southbound lane of Columbia Street near Lincoln Street around 4:40 a.m., Sunday morning, when the car hit her. Surveillance video captured the car travelling through Cambridge into Somerville.
The vehicle is described as a 1996-1999 green or blue Ford Taurus. Police believe it sustained front-end damage to the bumper, headlight, and possibly the hood.
The elderly victim was transferred to a local hospital where she remains in critical condition.
According to police, the victim is a fixture in the Inman Square area. She is often seen in her wheelchair, feeding breadcrumbs to pigeons in Vellucci Park.
"She seemed very friendly. She always stopped to talk to the dogs or talk to the people with the dogs. I actually said a passing good morning to her a few times. She seemed very sweet," area coffee shop employee, Evan Fox said.
Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Cambridge Police Traffic Enforcement, 617-349-3307.
