Bus Carrying UMaine Basketball Team Crashes On I-95 In Georgetown
GEORGETOWN (CBS) - A bus carrying the University of Maine women's basketball team crashed on I-95 in Georgetown Tuesday night. The bus was traveling south when it crossed the median and the northbound lanes before coming to a rest in a wooded area.
The driver of the bus suffered serious injuries and was taken to a Boston hospital by medical helicopter. The northbound side of I-95 was shut down at Exit 54 while the crash was investigated.
People on the bus say it appears the driver suffered a medical incident prior to the crash.
There were 22 members of the team on the bus and they were each taken to the hospital as a precaution. The University of Maine says coach Richard Barron, players Ashleigh Roberts and Corinne Wellington and the team's director of basketball operations, Samantha Wheeler, suffered minor injuries.
The bus that was involved in the crash was operated by John T. Cyr and Sons located in Old Town, Maine.
A State Police cruiser that was responding to the initial crash was struck from behind by another car. The trooper was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.
The team was scheduled to face Boston University Wednesday night.
