BOSTON (CBS/AP) — Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger had a shelf filled with books about gangsters, including several about himself, when he was captured in California last year after 16 years on the run.
Bulger, former leader of the Winter Hill Gang who was also an FBI informant, fled Boston shortly before he was indicted in early 1995. He was one of the FBI's most wanted fugitives until he and longtime girlfriend Catherine Greig were caught last June.
A photo of a bookshelf found in their Santa Monica apartment shows "G-Men and Gangsters" and "The Untold Story of My Life Inside Whitey Bulger's Irish Mob," co-written by Kevin Weeks, Bulger's former right-hand man.
The photo was among hundreds of documents prosecutors released Friday, three days after Greig was sentenced to eight years in prison for helping Bulger on the run.
After seeing the photos, Steve Davis, whose sister was allegedly killed by Bulger, thinks Greig should have gotten a stiffer sentence.
"The amount of money they had, how cheap they lived, it was like a mousetrap in that apartment," says Davis. "She would have had to leave that apartment for weeks in order for him to set up those walls to hide them from her."
"They're co-conspirators as wife and husband," he says, "they're co-conspirators as renters of the apartment and everything that comes into that apartment."
Stephen Rakes, who lost his liquor license to Bulger, also thinks Greig should have faced more charges.
"Thirty guns means a gun every few feet, you can't walk anywhere without walking into one or two guns," he says.
