Bulger Lawyers Accuse Prosecutors Of Hampering Case

BOSTON (AP) — James "Whitey" Bulger's lawyer says prosecutors are hampering his preparation for the mobster's trial by drowning the defense with repetitive pre-trial documents.

In a status report filed in U.S. District Court, attorney J.W. Carney Jr. said many of the hundreds of thousands of pages turned over by prosecutors are duplicative and have cut into the time the defense has to prepare for the March trial.

Prosecutors and Bulger's lawyers are due in court Friday to update a judge on the exchange of evidence.

Bulger, the former leader of the notorious Winter Hill Gang, is awaiting trial for his alleged participation in 19 murders. He was also an FBI informant.

Prosecutors have accused Carney of trying to influence potential jurors by questioning the credibility of prospective witnesses at the upcoming trial.
